via wins mass timber competition.

Oct 20, 2023

The Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) and USDA Forest Service have revealed the winning proposals for the 2023 Mass Timber Competition: Building to Net-Zero Carbon. We're thrilled to be the architect of record for Via, one of the five winning designs. Via was developed in partnership with the design architect A226, client/developer Bluecrane, structural engineers at Tatum Smith Welcher Engineers and Aspect Structural Engineers, and general contractor ARCO Construction. This 2.5-acre, 131-unit mixed-use development in downtown Springdale, Arkansas, has a hybrid structure consisting of conventional wood framing, cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, and prefabricated bathroom modules.

The winning designs were chosen based on their ability to highlight mass timber's application towards the reduction of carbon footprints within the built environment. Designers were asked to demonstrate the material's commercial viability and design and construction practicality, while using wood sourced from sustainably-managed forests, ideally harvested and manufactured in the United States.
