bike porch wins best in show.

Dec 08, 2021

The modus studio entry in this year's Architect as Artist Design/Build Competition at the AIA Arkansas state convention won Best in Show, and now we're asking for some help to bring our Bike Porch dreams to life!

Mobility is a powerful tool for access to employment and community resources. Bicycles in particular are an essential vehicle for vulnerable low-income and homeless populations working to get on their feet. With this understanding, modus teamed up with New Beginnings NWA to assist in their mission to serve under-resourced, vulnerable, and exploited communities in Northwest Arkansas. We designed the Bike Porch as a multifunctional outdoor fixture acting as bike parking, seating, and placemaking for residents of the New Beginnings low-barrier housing community. We hope to provide one for each cabin, each with a unique color to bring identity, vibrancy, and connectivity to the campus. With a recent pledge by another community partner, New Beginnings residents will each have their own bicycle for personal transportation. Currently, they do not have a place to store these bikes. We are hoping to complete a fundraising goal of $15,200 to create 19 more Bike Porches for the campus so all residents will have a place to store their bikes.
