Magnolia, AR [2011 - in process] The new Lifesmart Center is another iteration of an existing building which expands upon the Magnolia Regional Medical Center Campus. Originally the building was a Kroger store built in the late 60's, then converted into Magnolia Lanes bowling alley, and is currently a physical therapy center operated by Magnolia Regional Medical Center. The project relates to the design language of the Medical Center across the street while at the same time re-branding itself as a new stand-alone facility. Landscaping elements are cut into the existing parking lot to break up the 100% paved surface in front for a softer more natural transition from parking to entry. Functionally, outdoor space is gained through adding a usable "porch" area, outdoor furniture, and moments of repose. Aesthetically, the introduction of the softer landscape elements and wood screen walls brings warmth to the exterior of what is currently a very hard, industrial building. Through the use of simple materials and a disciplined design strategy, new life is breathed into this building giving it a healing atmosphere and contemporary relevance along the street frontage.
